Vlog #6 : What will we remember from this?

Madame Sarah reminds us that our school fosters connection, character development, and social emotional as well as academic learning.

Hi! Bonjour! I’m Sarah Yaakoby, the Acting Head of School of North Seattle French School. And I wanted to share a message with you with you this week about love. A quote from the French philosophers, Jean-Jacques Rousseau “Aimer et être aimé sera la grande affaire de toutes notre vies. To love and be loved will be the greatest event of our lives.” We’re in the middle of a historic event right now, but what are we going to remember at the end of it?

Jean-Jacques Rousseau was one of the first philosophers to speak to us about education and its purpose in developing moral sense and character. And that is also the philosophy of our school. We use the positive discipline philosophy to guide us in creating a program that is democratic, that values student voice, where our students are at the center of our program. We have a program that values not only academic learning, but social emotional learning is just as important.

And in this situation, we know that it’s even more important. We care about how students do academically, but even more than that, we care about how they feel. At the end of this event, will they remember that they were loved? Will they remember how they loved their peers and their community? That’s driving what we’re doing and that’s driving our decisions. The well-being of our students is our top priority. And that’s why we’re offering students opportunities to connect–not only to continue with our academic program–but to connect with their peers and their teachers and their community on a daily basis.

I’d like you to take a moment today if you’re a student who’s watching this to make sure that you are showing someone in your life how they’re loved and to make sure that you’re feeling loved in this hard time. After this is all over, think about what do we want to remember? We want to remember being loved and we want to remember our love and kindness and how we showed that to others. And as we continue through this, we will keep showing our love to our students.

We can’t wait to see you again in person. And in the meantime, we will keep connecting with you and connecting with your emotions and connecting with you with love. Bonne journée. Merci.
